  249. A ‚Äúgrisaille‚Äù is a painting done entirely in greys.  Here, Raphael uses it to imitate the look of sculpted stone.

  253.   Even in these minor decorations to fill some awkward space, Raphael remains consistent to both the themes and stylistic choices he has made for the major paintings.  In both of these cases we see examples of the value placed on poetic works by the most important of political rulers of antiquity‚ÄîAlexander in Greece, Augustus in Rome.  It is, if you will, Raphael‚Äôs pitch for the importance of art, here emphasized on the ‚ÄúPoetry‚Äù wall.  In the mock sculptured style, too, Raphael continues to emphasize artifice and artfulness, as he does in the mock mosaics of the upper wall and ceiling.
